    ORIGINS

Since ancient times, man has played games where an object was hit with a curved stick. So on a kouros dating from 400 BC. BC, two naked men are playing a game, bent forward with a stick shaped object in his hand and a bullet between them. Later, a painting by Pieter Bruegel, Hunters in the Snow (1565), shows players using curved sticks to play with a small object on the ice.

The use of the word "hockey" to refer to such games is attested since 1785 (1527 for hockie) but its etymology is uncertain. It is perhaps derived from the Old French word of Germanic origin meaning a hiccup hook shepherd's staff or the word hoghee Iroquois.

European immigrants introduced in North America a multitude of games like hockey, such as French lacrosse, Scottish shinty, the Irish hurling and hockey, played in England. These games appear to have been adapted to be played on the ice and have imported some aspects of the game of lacrosse (as the physical hardness) played by Native Americans of the Iroquois family. Several Canadian cities can claim to be the birthplace of ice hockey, Halifax, Windsor or Kingston, but the foundation of the modern game of ice hockey was held in Montreal, Quebec.

    THE GAME

The international rules of ice hockey are issued by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). This is also the regulation that applies in the national championships in most countries outside of North America.

Indeed, the United States and Canada (and although these countries are members of the IIHF), leagues may enact their own rules. And the National Hockey League has a law that differs somewhat from that of the IIHF, in particular the fighting, totally banned in international regulation.

    HOCKEY GAME

Ice hockey is played on a rink that can be either internal or external, the ice can be natural or artificial. In most of the meetings held in a competition, the ice is artificial. There are different sizes of rinks but the International Ice Hockey Federation defines regulatory dimensions: between 56 and 61 m long and between 26 and 30 m wide. For international competitions, the minimum dimensions spend 60m on 29 m. The playing area has rounded corners with a radius of between 7 and 8.5 m. Protection ice must be installed above the edges of the ice, the ice forming between 1.60 and 2 meters high behind the goals and at least 80 cm in height on the rest of the ice.

Several parties make up the ice: a defensive zone between the bottom of the ice rink and the first blue line, a neutral zone between the two blue lines and finally an offensive zone blue line between the second and the other end of the ice. Red lines in number three also cut the ice in the direction of the width of a line to centre ice and two lines constituting the goal lines and distant from each end of 4 m. The blue lines are drawn so that the spacing between these two lines is equal
